Becki Chan creates handmade jewellery and art objects from her studio located in Vancouver, British Columbia. Given Becki’s educational background in sculpture and architecture, she finds beauty and inspiration in structure and geometry. Each piece is developed out of Becki’s sculptural work and is defined by a stripped-down vocabulary of form. Cast in silver, elementary lines and simplified shapes combine and repeat, with slight variations and irregularities. When did the idea of launching GREY by Becki Chan take root?
I have always wanted to turn my sculptures and conceptual architectural models into jewellery. After working on spatial projects and art installations for nearly 10 years, I wanted to develop my own product that I can both design and produce. About a year ago, I launched GREY – wearable art.
Who inspires you and your creative process?
My educational background is in Sculpture and Architecture. Many modern sculptors and architects have been my inspirations, especially Sol Lewitt and Carlo Scarpa.
Tell us about your favourite product from your collection.
I would have to say the Rift Ring, because the design is bold, simple and elegant. It is a statement ring.
How do you get out of your creative ruts?
Work on something else and then come back to it. My studio is in MakerLabs I share my studio with many other makers. I am very lucky to have many people to talk to when I’m in a rut.
What is your favourite Etsy related moment so far?
When I first started this jewellery line, I wanted to find someone to make my jewellery signature stamp. I was not able to find someone locally. After more in-depth googling, an etsy link popped up. SteelStamps makes custom metal jewelry and leather stamps. The vendor was great to work with.
