Can you believe the entire remainder of WoodType’s sign is made without nails, only with wood, glue and various stains and paints? Let’s hear more directly from Jeremie, the owner and designer of WoodType, in our interview below. Of course be sure to visit Jeremie and WoodType at our Etsy Vancouver Market, happening in just 10 days!
When did the idea of launching WoodType take root?
A few years I hosted a wine and cheese party for friends and I wanted to create something to brighten up the living room. I decided to make a typographic sign with the word “Cheese” illuminated with Christmas lights. It became apparent how powerful a singular word can be when presented this way—people smiled whenever they looked at it. From then on I began making signs for display in people’s homes as lighting, or as art pieces.
Tell us about your favourite product from your collection.
I guess my favourite item would have to be my “Cheese” sign. It was the first and it always makes people smile.
How do you get out of your creative ruts?
Because I take my inspiration from my surroundings, it’s pretty easy to get out of a rut. All I have to do is go for a walk. Street and shop signs, words that I hear people say, colours that catch my attention—all these things stimulate ideas and motivation.
What are some of the proudest achievements of your creative career so far?
Some of my signs have been featured on Television which made me very proud. I was also interviewed on CBC Radio which was a big achievement for me.
What is your favourite Etsy related moment so far?
The best and most memorable moment I’ve had with Easy by far is the moment I made my first sale. I couldn’t believe someone bought one of my signs. The sale was for a custom “Open” sign for a business.
