Clean. Simple. Minimalist. Monochrome. Geometric. is Em’say.
Nadia, the designer behind Em’say, shares her story as she prepares for her first ever EVM booth at the Etsy Vancouver Market, taking place in just a few weeks!
When did the idea of launching EM’SAY take root?
I’ve always liked making things. I would be inspired by pieces I would find at boutiques and always knew that I had the ability to make something similar if I tried. So I did! I wasn’t formally trained, it came naturally, and online tutorials were really helpful. After a recent move I decided to design and create all the missing decor pieces myself, from pendant lights to shelves to tables. I eventually came to make stools designed by Ben Uyeda out of concrete and quickly realized I could make anything out of this underrated material. I started experimenting using different types of molds and perfected my craft by trial and error. That’s when I started getting orders from friends and how EM’SAY was born.
Tell us about your favourite product from your collection.
Probably the very first planter I ever designed. I called it Mary. It took a few tries but it eventually came out exactly how I wanted. As far at the paint pattern goes it’s by far the most intricate I have in my collection because of the angles. I only make it on demand as it takes twice as long as other planters to make but it’s worth it.
What are some of the proudest achievements of your creative career so far?
My creative career is still so young having started EM’SAY this past summer everything seems like an achievement. I guess what I’m most proud of is the feedback I get from clients telling me how much they love their EM’SAY pieces. I think that’s something that will never get old and I’m not sure anything will ever beat that.
Tell us something exciting that you have planned for EM’SAY in the next 12 months.
I’m looking forward to see EM’SAY products in stores in and around Vancouver starting this January 2017!
What are you most excited for about the upcoming Etsy Vancouver Market?
This will be my very first Etsy Vancouver Market and I’m just excited to be part of it. I’ve heard it’s one of the best markets in Vancouver and I’m looking forward to meeting other vendors and seeing what’s in store for shoppers. I’m even hoping to get a few minutes for myself to get some holiday shopping done!
