To many children, summer break is a time for laughter, snacks, and fun and games. However, for tens of thousands of children, these school breaks are times of loneliness, hunger, and instability. Currently, 1 in 5 children in Metro Vancouver are living in poverty. When school doors close for the winter and holiday break, these children often find themselves with nowhere to go and no one to turn to. This is where the KidSafe Project Society comes in.

The KidSafe Project Society is a Vancouver-based charity whose mission is to provide nurturing safe havens for vulnerable inner-city children when schools are traditionally closed. We were founded in 1993 by a group of concerned citizens in response to a tragedy that saw an 8-year-old child assaulted and abandoned when left home alone during school break. The community was outraged by the tragedy, then galvanized into action. From this grass-roots beginning 23 years ago, KidSafe now provides essential services to over 450 vulnerable Vancouver children and youth each year.

School break is a happy time at KidSafe. Each day, children receive a full day of educational and recreational activities, support from caring adults, and healthy, home-cooked meals. Twice per week, children also venture out on fun field-trips to community locales like Science World, Cultus Lake Waterpark, and Grouse Mountain. And, thanks to the generosity of caring community donors like Etsy, all of these experiences are offered to children absolutely free of charge!
